American Teacher: Dave Eggers and Matt Damon’s new documentary is almost as flawed as Waiting for Superman. - Slate Magazine

Interesting article on the movie "American Teacher". But even more interesting is the author's take on the impact of high-stakes testing. What do you think about testing, teacher pay, and the possible impact of technology on teaching and learning?

  1. I have not seen the movies described in the article but I agree that merit pay is a dilemma. Educating a child is complex and it cannot be measured by a one day score. All this may lead to even more testing in more grades and in more subjects. I don't see how technology factors into the equation except to compute some kind of score from many perspectives that have been reduced to numbers that a program will "average" in order to judge effectiveness. Can anyone agree on a perfect rubric to judge parenting? What if the children one parents are disabled? Have Aspergers? Just have low ability? Do we expect same outcomes for all our children? We can view teaching in similar ways. Beth
